Many travellers consider the Maldives to be the leading tropical beach holiday destination on Earth and a perfect place to unwind and relax from the chaotic and hectic lifestyle that so many people live today. The Maldives consists of 1,192 islands within the Indian Ocean and is well known for its island environment and naturally pristine beaches.
With just under 100 island resorts a visitor can choose to experience each island’s own distinct character and feel. There is a wide range of accommodations that will cater to the excited tourist, but whichever island they choose to visit they will discover that each of the islands are blessed with warm and shallow waters, luxuriant tropical vegetation, stunning coral beaches and accommodations that can only be expected in a tropical beach holiday destination such as this. There are not many places that will offer a combination of powdery white sands and clear, turquoise coloured sea together with year round sunshine.
Granted, a lot of visitors will come to the Maldives to appreciate the sea and the attractions it holds. The seas of the Maldives are wonderfully warm and will offer high visibility all through the year. A snorkeller will be able to watch passing fish that are sometimes fifty metres from them as the water is so clear. There is a spectacular formation of more than three thousand coral reefs together with free flowing monsoon tides that have resulted in creating superb coral reef areas for divers. There are more than a thousand fish species as well as other kinds of underwater creatures that inhabit the waters of the Maldives. For a visitor who wants to dive, safari boats and resorts will give basic and advanced training with high standard diving facilities.
Surfing enthusiasts are drawn to the Maldives for its massive swells, particularly from June through to September. The swells will range from three to eight feet. A few well known surf breaks can be found at the South and North Male Atoll. Surfaries are specific surf cruises that are offered by various cruise operators further out from Male.
Fishing is part of a Maldivian’s life. It is in their blood. Maldivian fishermen are woken up at dawn by the island roosters calling them to start their day at sea. They use the artfully graceful line and pole method to fish. Many resorts offer the visitor night reef fishing trips as a way for experiencing the satisfaction and pleasure of catching their own fish and then cooking it. Boats leave before sunset and the crew shows the visitor the way to use the fishing gear. They will be able to catch enough for their barbeque grill within an hour.
To soothe their senses, a visitor just has to lie on one of the deserted beaches listening to the gentle rhythm of the lapping waves, breathe in the salty air, and feel the soft white sands beneath their bare feet. Each island offers a secluded setting and lush green vegetation and is a refreshingly natural spa within its own right. Every resort at the Maldives has their own spa as well, and uses traditional healing treatments passed down through the generations including sand massage, gandhakolhi leaf treatment and coconut oil treatment. Some of these spas are built underwater, some on wooden jetties and others nestled within lush vegetation.
