Mauritius on the 2012 List of 10 Best Ethical Destinations within the Developing World

There are numerous ways to convey an important message. We can do this by speaking up for human rights and taking a stand for our planet’s health. Social networking is critical, but what is also a potent communicating tool is travel. Tourism and travel are part of the dynamic economic forces that are prevalent in the world today. There has been a steady trend towards green practices and sustainable tourism by travelers and governments alike.

These practices and policies of nations within the developing world are reviewed each year. Ten of the best nations are then selected who have done a brilliant job of preserving the environment they live in, upholding human rights, and creating a community based tourism industry that is sustainable. When tourists visit these destinations, they use their economic power of travelling money for supporting these countries. The ten countries on this list have all made determined efforts to doing the right thing in these areas of consideration.

The countries that made the 2012 list of the 10 Best Ethical Destinations within the Developing World are (in no order):

  • Argentina
  • Uruguay
  • The Bahamas
  • Serbia
  • Mauritius
  • Chile
  • Palau
  • Costa Rica
  • Latvia
  • Dominica

The research is begun by concentrating on three broad categories. These categories are Human Rights, Social Welfare, and Environmental Protection. Each of the categories is looked at for past and current information. This is done so as to see how the country has changed in any way over time and the current state that they are in now. This information helps in selecting countries that actively improve the conditions of their environment, people and government. In-depth case research is also carried out that focuses on any actions that each government has taken through the year which has helped to improve on circumstances and practices in their respective countries.

In September, the WHO (World Health Organization) stated that the second-best air quality throughout the world is found in Mauritius. A critical point that is also taken into consideration is a country’s social welfare with regards its citizens as well as visitors. In this respect Mauritius received their highest score so far. It was placed far above a regional average, considerably above a world average, and almost within the ‘high human development’ category.

To understand the challenges that each nation must address, respected sources such as Freedom House, Reporters Without Borders, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International were consulted to evaluate the human rights records of each country.

Mauritius also reached Tier 1 in the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons 2011 report. It is the only country in this list to do so.

Once again, island states are strongly presented in the 2012 Top 10 list. These island states include Mauritius, Palau, Dominica and the Bahamas. One of the reasons is because of their concerted environmental efforts. These particular states realize that islands are going to be severely affected by climate changes. They are therefore taking necessary action with regards progressive environmental strategies.
